Hi there,
I've recently discovered your blog and am dying to learn more. I have two little boys - one is almost 3 years old and the other is just 5 months. I would very much like them to learn Mandarin, but have no idea where to even start. I've gotten a DVD series called Muzzy, but my toddler isn't all that motivated to learn much.
I'm also looking into teachers who could teach the language to him but am finding most are reluctant to start at this age (I'm based in South Africa). I would be happy to learn alongside him, but where do I even start?

Hi,

Thanks for your comment.

I'd suggest having a native speaker (a high school or college student would be perfect) sing songs with your child and read picture & word books aloud. He or she can introduce games such as walking and counting -- step, yi, step, er, step, san, etc.

You can also use regular DVDs in Chinese with your older child (the infant is too young for watching TV, of course) using shows such as Teletubbies, Dora, or Thomas the Tank Engine. We carry these shows on our site...if you look at our older posts, there are some video clips, too.
